Dear friends,

When I started Residencias Los Jardines, I started writing a weekly newsletter -determined to tell all the good, bad, and the ugly. I knew some readers would be interested in the construction process. I expected others might be interested in the lifestyle of two people who had decided to live outside the box. For others, the adventures of Lita, the parrot and the cat took on an entertainment saga all its own.

Residencias Los Jardines is finished. We periodically have re-sales and rental availability. Some readers may be interested in this information.

Our Lives

Weather: Mostly overcast this week, normal rainy weather, no wind, temperatures 25C / 78F -beautiful.

Hospital Metropolitano: Started the evaluation for elective / preventative surgery. Surgery will happen sometime after results for the stress test on Aug. 17.

Dentistry: With my surgery being postponed, I think we will proceed with the dental stuff.

Rentals -chipping away at vacancies: I have be able to lease three units in the past two weeks... 123, 112, 114. All at reduced prices so I guess our last of interest stemmed from our prices being too high. Now I have only two remaining... great units 106C and D. Two of the new tenants are Russian and one is Canadian prof. working at the Peace University. In addition, I was able to rent a vacant unit coming at Paradisus...

Los Jardines is getting ready for a shareholder election. Not a fun time here as jocking for support dominates the social structure. So far I have managed to sit on the sidelines -however, my options are really very discouraging. But doing anything will jeopardize my priority... peace and tranquility... but my assessment is that we have a significant problem facing us... I don't know what I am going to do... I feel I have pulled the sled far long enough... but... I see parallels to the US political arena before and what could follow -chaos- is perhaps not too far different...

1. Exports: Medical devices are growing the fastest and represent the better paying jobs... this is a good market niche for CR.

2. Caja birth control: I didn't know they provided it in any shape or form. I am surprise being a Catholic country and more surprised that I didn't know about it... I have asked people before because I was curious and always got a not available response... I think it isn't well marketed...

1. Goods and services exports up this year
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The exports of goods and services in the first six months of the year reached $5.44 billion, which means an eight percent growth when compared to the same period in 2016.

The figures were released Thursday by the Ministerio de Comercio Exterior and the Promotora de Comercio Exterior in the Análisis en la Evolución de Exportaciones de Bienes y Servicios.

By sectors, the agricultural one grew three percent, due to the increased sales of pineapple, bananas and frozen fruits. The exports of medical devices and contact lenses grew 11 percent and the food industry increased six percent.

In the plastic industry, there was a reduction of exports for packaging articles in Central America and also a decrease by seven percent in textiles to Guatemala.

In general terms, the data showed a positive behavior, according to Pedro Beirute, general manager of Procomer. "The export flows registered in the first halves of the last five years show a growing trend,” he added. “They recovered from a decrease of $119 million during the first semester of 2013 to positive and sustained changes from 2014 onwards.”

In regards to the services sector, exports between January and March 2017 totaled $2.454 billion.

Here, the travel exports registered a 55 percent market share of the foreign sales market, while services for businesses accounted for a 28 percent of it.

There was also a four percent increase in the amount of new national standard companies, while new companies created under the tax free or tax reduced status of Zona Libre grew by 12 percent.

2. Caja will offer birth control implant
By the A.M. Costa Rica staff

The social security health system will offer a new birth control option to their female affiliates: etonogestrel implants.

It consists of a four centimeters small bar placed under the skin of the arm to release etonogestrel, a hormone that prevents ovulation. It is is placed through a simple procedure, has an effectiveness rate of 99 percent and works for a period of approximately three years, according to the Caja Costarricense del Seguro Social.

The device is already part of the official list of medications of the Caja, and will be gradually offered, since the training of health personnel on its correct use still pending. The idea is to let women choose, based on the proper information, the birth control method that best suits their needs, and encourages adherence to the treatment.

The Caja will train medical, nursing, psychology, social work and pharmacy personnel to provide counseling on the method, but it will prescribed and placed only by obstetrician nurses.

"In 2017 training will begin with staff from from the Central Pacific region and the Hospital México and will gradually continue throughout the country," the document reads.

The decision of offering the new implant was taken based on a technical analysis carried out by officials of the women's health program staff and also members of the Comprehensive Adolescent Care Program.

The Mesoamerican Health Project, an initiative that seeks to contribute to the reduction of teenage pregnancy and care during early maternity and paternity also took part in the project.

The institution also reported that Guanacaste’s La Cruz health system will prioritize the new method due to the existence of high pregnancy rates among teenagers. There, the Caja will also offer injectable birth control and the Intrauterine Device.

According to the Caja, the latter continues to be a very effective method to prevent pregnancies but its use has decreased due to misconception about its benefits.
