Dear friends,

When I started Residencias Los Jardines, I started writing a weekly newsletter -determined to tell all the good, bad, and the ugly. I knew some readers would be interested in the construction process. I expected others might be interested in the lifestyle of two people who had decided to live outside the box. For others, the adventures of Lita, the parrot and the cat took on an entertainment saga all its own.

Residencias Los Jardines is finished. We periodically have re-sales and rental availability. Some readers may be interested in this information.

Each of the units consists of two bedrooms / two bathrooms, and a large living/dining/kitchen area. The floor plan of each of these units has eliminated the optional "den / office" divider. The result is a larger area offering more flexible furniture arrangements while still maintaining the option of including an office area. At 105m2 plus two parking spots each and storage locker, they offer a great opportunity for someone seeking views, security, central location, and first class, all round living...

Our Lives

Weather: We are into the dry season... winds have started and will get progressively stronger... no rain, few clouds, beautiful but we need to keep the plants happy... Nature is not doing it for us...

What Happened This Week:

Heredia House: It closed!!!!! blood pressure is normal... wow!!!!!!

Condo Administration: Focused on developing the info necessary for the shareholder's meeting ...while keeping things going on site.

Ringing in the new year: Usually private fireworks begin around 9pm and get really busy around midnight. Over the past several years, this has waned but not completely died... just start later and don't last as long.

While walking the other morning, I met an old friend... Scott Oliver. He and I came to CR about the same time, did some business together and then each got busy in different but somewhat parallel courses. Anyway, I hadn't seen him for a number of years and hadn't received his blog "We Love Costa Rica"; Well, he sold the blog a couple years ago and is now returning to Britain. Why? It is too difficult to get things done here; it is very difficult getting money into the country which really limits new business; and it is too expensive. This is a familiar refrain. I am not surprised by any of it. It was nice putting closure on our time here. We reminisced about a couple social events we had together...

New Year's Resolution: To stay out of trouble... short and sweet... difficult to do in CR... We'll see...

1. CR is #2 retirement location: According to International Living.

Costa Rica Ranks as the Second Best Retirement Destination in the World

International Living published their 2019 Global Retirement Index, which scores the world´s top 25 retirement destinations across 13 categories, including, including cost of living, governance, retiree benefits, climate and healthcare, among many other aspects that are important for those looking for a place to retire.

"This yearly Index examines safe, good-value destinations beyond the U.S. or Canadian borders—comparing, contrasting, ranking, and rating them to select spots across the globe where a retired couple can live a comfortable, carefree life on $1,800 or less a month, all in", explains the press release.

"The 2019 Index itself is more comprehensive than ever, including evaluations in 13 categories (one more than last year’s): buying and investing, renting, benefits and discounts, visas and residence, cost of living, fitting in, entertainment and amenities, healthcare, healthy lifestyle, development, climate, opportunity, and governance".

Costa Rica climbed two spots in this ranking, last year the country was listed in position 4, behind Mexico, Panama and Ecuador.

The description given by IL, correspondent Kathleen Evans, highlights the country´s tropical climate, the top-notch affordable medical care, bargan real estate, low cost of living and natural beauty as well as the warm and welcoming personality of the Ticos.

Having communities of expats that help through the process of acclimating is also part of the reasons the country is an ideal retirement destination.

According to International Living’s 2019 Global Retirement Index, the world’s top 10 retirement destinations are:

#1 Panama
#2 Costa Rica
#3 Mexico
#4 Ecuador
#5 Malaysia
#6 Colombia
#7 Portugal
#8 Peru
#9 Thailand
#10 Spain
